The best way to prevent tarnishing of your sterling piece is to keep it in a closed container, such as a plastic bag, away from air. Regular use will also slow oxidation.

If your jewelry does become tarnished, baking soda is a great remedy. It may be used dry or wet. For items such as chains, cables or pieces with individual flowers or leaves, take a palm full of baking soda and rub the piece with your fingers until the tarnish is removed. Brush off the remaining soda. A wet toothbrush with some baking soda and mild soap may also be used to get into hard to reach areas.

Gold jewelry may be cleaned in the same way. If your piece is oxidized, there is no need to clean it. The finish will remain an even dark gray to black with normal use.
